Meaning of Surah Waqiah: What Does “Al-Waqiah” Mean?
The meaning of Surah Waqiah is “The Inevitable Event”. Al-Waqiah (الواقعة) is a name for the Day of Judgment: an event that will certainly happen and that no one can stop or deny.
Surah Al-Waqiah is the 56th chapter of the Quran. It takes its name from the first verse, which opens with this word. Below you will find what the word means, where it comes from, and how it is translated into Urdu, Hindi, Bangla, and Malay.
What Does “Al-Waqiah” Mean?
In Arabic, al-waqi’ah means “the thing that happens” or “the event that takes place”. The word describes something that is not just possible, but certain to occur.
Translators render it in slightly different ways:
- The Inevitable Event
- The Event (that will surely come)
- The Occurrence
- That Which Must Come to Pass
All of these point to the same idea: the Day of Resurrection is a fixed reality, not a possibility.
The Root of the Word Waqiah
Al-Waqiah comes from the three-letter Arabic root و ق ع (wa-qaf-‘ayn). This root carries the idea of falling, landing or taking place.
The same root appears several times in the surah itself:
| Arabic word | Ayah | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| وَقَعَتِ (waqa’at) | 56:1 | it occurs |
| الْوَاقِعَةُ (al-waqi’ah) | 56:1 | the Inevitable Event |
| لِوَقْعَتِهَا (li-waq’atiha) | 56:2 | its occurrence |
| بِمَوَاقِعِ (bi-mawaqi’) | 56:75 | the positions (of the stars) |

Why Is It Called Surah Al-Waqiah?
The surah is named after the word that appears in its opening line. Naming a surah after a key word in its first verse is common in the Quran.
The name also fits the surah’s main subject. From start to finish, it describes the Day of Judgment, what will happen to people on that Day, and why that Day is certain. The title tells the reader, before the first verse ends, that this surah is about an event that cannot be avoided.
Al-Waqiah: One of the Names of the Day of Judgment
The Quran uses several names for the Day of Judgment. Each name highlights a different side of that Day, and Al-Waqiah stresses that it is certain to happen.
| Name | Meaning | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Al-Waqiah | The Inevitable Event | Surah 56:1 |
| Al-Haqqah | The Undeniable Reality | Surah 69:1 |
| Al-Qari’ah | The Striking Calamity | Surah 101:1 |
| Al-Ghashiyah | The Overwhelming Event | Surah 88:1 |
| As-Sakhkhah | The Deafening Blast | Surah 80:33 |
| At-Tammah al-Kubra | The Greatest Catastrophe | Surah 79:34 |
Where Al-Qari’ah speaks of the shock of that Day, Al-Waqiah answers a different question: will it really happen? The answer, given in the surah’s second verse, is that nobody will be able to deny it when it comes.

What the Opening Verses Tell Us About the Name
The first three verses explain the name directly:
- Verse 1: When the Inevitable Event takes place,
- Verse 2: no one will be able to deny that it has happened.
- Verse 3: it will bring some people down and raise others.
So the name is not only a label. It states the surah’s first claim: the Day is coming; it cannot be denied, and it will change people’s ranks. Many who were high in this world will be lowered, and many who were humble will be raised.
