Surah Waqiah Tajweed Rules by Ayah: Complete Practice Guide
Surah Waqiah has 96 ayahs, and learning its Tajweed verse by verse can make Quran recitation clearer and more accurate. This guide explains the main Tajweed points found in each ayah using the Arabic text, the relevant rule, and a short reading tip. The goal is not to label every letter with a rule. Instead, the guide focuses on the places where a learner should pay special attention, such as Noon Sakinah, Tanween, Meem Sakinah, Ghunnah, Madd, Ikhfa, Idgham, Izhar, Iqlab, Qalqalah, and the rules of Lam.
The guide follows the common Hafs recitation framework. Tajweed is best learned by listening to a qualified teacher because written descriptions cannot fully replace hearing the correct makhraj, sifat, timing, and stopping points.
What Are Tajweed Rules?
Tajweed means giving each Quranic letter its proper pronunciation and observing the rules that apply when letters meet. For beginners, the most useful Surah Waqiah rules to notice are Noon Sakinah and Tanween, Meem Sakinah, Ghunnah, Madd, Qalqalah, Lam Shamsiyyah, Lam Qamariyyah, and the correct treatment of Hamzah.

The best way to learn Surah Waqiah Tajweed rules is to study the ayahs one at a time and identify the rule before reciting. The main rules you will repeatedly meet include Noon Sakinah and Tanween rules, Meem Sakinah rules, Ghunnah, Madd, Ikhfa, Idgham, Izhar, Iqlab, Qalqalah, and Lam Shamsiyyah or Lam Qamariyyah. Use the ayah table above with a reliable recitation and teacher feedback rather than relying on text alone.
How to Use This Guide for Tajweed
- Idgham with Ghunnah appears frequently after Tanween or Noon Sakinah before ي, ن, م, or و. Notice examples such as مِن مَّعِينٍ and مِن يَحْمُومٍ.
- Idgham without Ghunnah appears when Tanween or Noon Sakinah is followed by ل or ر. A clear example is مِّن رَّبِّ.
- Iqlab appears when Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by ب. Examples include هَبَاءً مُّنۢبَثًّا and جَزَاءًۢ بِمَا.
- Ikhfa appears in several places, including مِن شَجَرٍ and مِن زَقُّومٍ. The Noon sound is not fully clear and is accompanied by Ghunnah.
- Izhar Halqi occurs before throat letters. Examples include حُورٌ عِينٌ and مِنْ أَصْحَابِ.
- Meem Sakinah rules are important in phrases such as عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ, أَنتُمْ مُّدْهِنُونَ, and مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن.
- Lam Shamsiyyah and Lam Qamariyyah occur throughout the Surah. Learning to identify the next letter makes these rules easier.
- Madd should be practiced with a teacher or trusted recitation model because the exact length can depend on the type of Madd and the chosen recitation.
Common Mistakes When Reading Surah Waqiah
- Reading every Noon Sakinah clearly. First check the next letter to determine Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab, or Ikhfa.
- Adding an extra nasal sound where Ghunnah is not required.
- Confusing a shaddah with Qalqalah. Qalqalah depends on the qalqalah letters being sakin; a shaddah alone does not automatically create Qalqalah.
- Making every Madd the same length. Madd types have different causes and rules.
- Pronouncing Lam in Lam Shamsiyyah as a separate strong l sound.
- Skipping Hamzah or making Hamzah too soft.
- Trying to learn all 96 ayahs only from written rules. Listening and teacher feedback are essential.
